THE MILL RESTAURANT

Loos has a new idea. He wants to turn a small mill near Prague into a place for excursions and a restaurant. Near Paris there are several very elegant places of this kind.

While the guests listen to the cheerful clapping of the mill, champagne is being drunk diligently. Anyone can watch in the kitchen how the joint is being roasted on a spit over a large open fire.

Loos discovers a small mill near Prague, which seems suitable to him. He gets a developer, Dr. Kapsa, interested in the idea, who drives out with us, accompanied by his wife, to inspect the mill.

Loos wants to start out small. The grassy plot in front of the house on the waterfront should be tidied up, a few tables with colourful tablecloths set out. The large courtyard is well suited to park the cars, a dining room for guests can be arranged for rainy weather. The miller is a simple man who is quite willing to provide the place at a low rent.

On the other side of the grass, by the water, is a small overgrown garden. “Here,” says Loos, “there will be a little menagerie. A couple of monkeys, exotic birds, and when more money is available, a few more animals will be added.”

A wine merchant in Prague is then sought out to supply beverages.

The whole plan falls through in the end though because the road from Prague to the small mill is too difficult for cars. The money to have the road fixed, of course, cannot be found.
